Sterling silver lidded glass container - Birmingham 1903/4
William Devenport
$119.00
This Edwardian sterling silver lidded container has a stunning design on its lid. It could be polished back to its original brilliant shine but I think the contrast given by the patina retained at the lower parts of the design adds to its considerable charm. It was made by well-known maker William Devenport in Birmingham in 1903/4. The lid is in excellent condition and its original gilt finish is still present despite its long life. Unfortunately there is some minor damage to the glass base. The octagonal hobnail design features some small chips to the high points of the design which is unfortunately quite common with this pattern, but the high levels of refraction make it hard to see. There is also a scratch internally to one wall and a small chip near the eight pointed star cut into its base. I have endeavoured to photograph all of its small flaws. There is no damage to the rim and no cracks. These signs of age are reflected in the price.
