Art Deco Shelley bowl vase with grill - stork design

This art deco design shows a strong Japanese influence. Japonisme had been a major stylistic influence for impressionists and designers of art nouveau after Japan reopened to foreign trade with the world in the mid nineteenth century and this continued for art deco designers. This piece feels almost like a bridge between art nouveau in the decorative border at the top and the more restrained art deco style below. The vase is in excellent condition overall but there are some areas of dark shadow on the red glaze that may date from production but can be closely examined in the photographs. It retains its original grill which means flowers stay in position in an arrangement and there is no need for environmentally unfriendly floral foam. My hastily arranged backyard flowers sadly don't do it justice.
