These two unframed watercolours are amazingly vivid, having been stored out of the light for almost 100 years. I don't know a great deal about the artist, but F. M. Templeman is listed as a working artist member of the Canterbury Society of Arts in the 1930s. Each of these two works has real charm and highlights different skills and interests. The work depicting two bottles and an apple shows an interest in reflections and as someone who struggles to avoid them in photographing objects for this website I much prefer them in an artwork rather than on the glass of a framed work. The shiny surface of the bottles and the window reflected in them is well realised. There is a diagonal crease in this work. The work that depicts a blue and white urn, tea cup and an orange shows an interest in oriental design or Japonisme which remained a powerful influence throughout the art deco period. The vivid contrast between the blue and orange elements in this work is particularly appealing. There are a couple of small marks in the upper left quadrant of this work. Stunning together or alone, they are a lovely piece of the past.
