Rare antique gilded plaster bust of a young boy

$495.00

This plaster bust is beautifully executed. I have found one similar example of the same subject and clearly by the same hand that was produced in Faenza, Italy, in the early 1900s. (It is currently for sale for 2300 Euro). The sculptor is unknown but the style and treatment of the clothing suggests the influence of a famous sculpture by Houdon of Alexandre Brongniart as a child. This work however, depicts an older child. The slightly mischievous expression and the detail in all areas, but particularly the hair indicates an artist of considerable skill. One of the joys of antique hunting is finding previous owner's notes and the one attached to the bottom of this bust with bluetack is no exception. From it we know a little of its provenance. Most recently it was purchased in Sydney in 1980 and originally had what they describe as a copper effect on the surface (probably intended to be a bronzed effect which was common on plaster sculptures). That owner then committed considerable funds in 1985 to have the piece water gilded. The rest of the note focuses on care and gives good advice about the handling of this rare piece, which should as suggested be picked up by the base rather than the head. Personally I tend to cradle works like this like a baby for the best possible support. With this rare piece, you can literally have your own golden boy. He is sure to be a talking point in any room.
