Sweetheart brooch in sterling silver with rose gold anchor - Birmingham 1916/7
Sheldon Brothers
$119.00
This to me is the archetypal sweetheart brooch. It was made by Sheldon Brothers in Birmingham in 1916/7 right in the middle of World War I. It was likely a gift from a soldier heading to war to his beloved. It is full of rich symbolism. The sterling silver base has a number of applied designs in silver and rose gold. The central rose gold anchor expresses steadfastness and loyalty, while the small forget-me-nots on either side, convey remembrance. At the edge of the design are two ivy leaves symbolising everlasting love, fidelity and immortality. I don't know how this soldier's story ended but I really hope he made it home to have a long life with the original recipient of this lovely brooch. This lovely piece of history deserves to be treasured.
The antique box and other antique pieces in the photographs are not included, but I hope to make some of these items available in the future.
Our jewellery photographs are taken in extreme close-up to show you every tiny detail. Any blemishes are greatly magnified and typically they aren’t noticeable to the naked eye.
