Sterling silver brooch/tie pin - Aesthetic Movement - Birmingham 1893/4

$105.00

I was immediately drawn to the simple elegance of this brooch assayed in Birmingham in 1893/4, it exhibits the focus on design and decoration that is associated with the Aesthetic Movement that was such a powerful force in the latter part of Victorian period. The maker's mark is obscured by the pin fitting but it is possibly an early piece by William Devenport. The wave-like central design also suggests the influence of Japonisme, an interest in Japanese art and culture that dominated after the foreign trade resumed with Japan in the 1850s. By the 1890s the popularity of japanese woodcuts was having a significant impact on Western art and that also filtered through into furniture, ceramics and jewellery design. I think this piece would be equally stunning used as a tie pin or on a jacket lapel.

The antique box and other antique pieces are not included, but I hope to make some of these items available in the future.

Our jewellery photographs are taken in extreme close-up to show you every tiny detail. Any blemishes are greatly magnified and typically they aren’t noticeable to the naked eye.
