George III sterling silver vinaigrette - Birmingham 1819/1820
John Thornton
$549.00
This stunning vinaigrette is over 200 years old and is in excellent condition. It was assayed in Birmingham in 1819/1820 and was most likely made by John Thornton. Vinaigrettes were used by those of means to attempt to hide the unpleasant smells of urban environments during the 18th and 19th centuries. Both hinges are in great condition. It even has an ancient looking piece of sweet-smelling sponge inside it. I'm not sure if the sponge is original but it is certainly very old. The vinaigrette has a particularly elegant gilded pierced grill. It is on the heavier and larger side for a vinaigrette and was meant to be carried rather than worn. There is some minor discoloration where the sponge has sat, potentially for centuries. It is a lovely tactile piece.
